Middle Class Elizabethan Clothing

There are very few sources of information on Middle Class Elizabethan women's clothing available today. One source, is a set of city maps produced in the mid to late 16th century, known as the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. The first volume of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum was published in Cologne in 1572. The sixth and the final volume appeared in 1617.

Below are images from the Civitates Orbis Terrarum of various English cities. At the bottom or sides of each map are a series of figures, couples or small groups of people. These are depications of lower, middle and upperclass English people.

For images from countries other than England, try this website - Civitates Orbis Terrarum.
