Viking CoatAfter finishing the Anglo-Saxon tunic, I decided that I would rather have a coat than a cloak to wear with it. After a bit of research, I found that the Vikings were known to have used an outer layer coat type item. I decided this was for me. The coat is basically a tunic open down the front. I used some upholstery wool that I'd won on Ebay. I dyed it a terracotta colour. It came out a little bit light but I think this is a colour that could've been produced with madder. 22nd Sept, 2004 I made the coat up today. Basic tunic construction, sewed the seams down. I plan on lining this but want to get the embroidery done first. So I will do the embroidery and get the lining ready, it should only take me ten minutes to sew it in once it's all ready to go together.
The faint blue line around the edge is where the embroidery will go. It is from the Mammen find, a variation on the acanthus vine on my Anglo-Saxon tunic. |
