Icelandic Cushion

This piece is for a WCoB competition, the category was Scandinavian embroidery. This image shows the completed cushion cover (with cushion insert). It is wool blend ground (I couldn't get 100% wool), using white DMC Medici wool thread to couch down white DMC tapestry wool using a simple couching technique. I chose to use the following image as inspiration. The cushion took a total of 35 hours to make.

  • Scandinavian Laid and Couched Cushion - (.pdf 469kb)

Instead of making a wallhanging, I have chosen to convert the work to a cushion. One, its a smaller, more managable project and secondly, its a more useful object.

I altered the pattern slightly, using the fragment of the top border to create an all encompassing border design. After making up my design, I found examples of exactly the same pattern on other Scandinavian works of the same period.
